Tasting - Clean Slate Riesling

Name: Clean Slate
Variety: Riesling
Region: Mosel
Country: Germany
Year: 2015
Price: $9.95

Wine Shop Review: "The balanced taste profile of Clean Slate is created by carefully selecting grapes from vineyards throughout the Mosel. Grapes from the Lower Mosel provide mineral notes, while grapes from the Middle Mosel create a hint of spiciness and grapes from the Upper Mosel supply fresh, peach flavors. The result is clean, fresh flavor that is delicious with food and perfect to share with friends."

My Review: This Riesling smelled crisp and acidic to me, tart as well and a hint of sweetness. It tasted sweet and tart, with fruity hints and perhaps a bit of earthy undertones too. The main thing that struck me was how well balanced it was between its elements. It mixed super well between start middle and finish and nothing seemed to overpower the other elements. Very nice.

I had this wine alone without food.

Tasting - Tabali Reserva Carmenere

Name: Tabali Reserva
Variety: Carmenere
Region: Cachapoal Valley
Country: Chile
Year: 2012
Price: $7.95

Wine Shop Review: "Dark, statuesque wine with concentrated, potent aromas of black olive, herbs and mulled blackberry. Tastes like textbook Carmenère, but without any jammy overripeness. Flavor of racy spiced berry, olive and  black pepper are all good, and there's that patented herbal, roasted quality on the finish, but not too much."

My Review: This wine had a distinct smell of pepper, and a green vegetable undertone like asparagus or green beans. It tasted pleasantly dry, with a bit of spicy dark berry, and was pleasantly dry.

Tasting - Yellowtail Shiraz Grenache

Name: Yellowtail
Variety: Blend of Shiraz and Grenache
Region: Casella
Country: Australia
Year: 2015
Price: $5.95

Wine Shop Review: "A classic blend of Shiraz and Grenache, with the raspberries, blackcurrant, lliquorice and spice characteristics of the Shiraz complementing the upfront cherry and cola flavors of the Grenache. The balanced wine offers earthy tones, strawberry aromas and vibrant acidity."

My Review: This was a change of pace from the previous two white wines, having a strong jammy scent with hints of blackberry and light raspberry. It tasted as it smelled, and was bone dry, dark and jammy.

I had this wine alone without food, but would like to pair it with something that would ease its tannic elements.

Tasting - Closerie Saint Antoine

Name: Closerie Saint Antoine Champ de Carra
Variety: Viognier
Region: Languedoc
Country: France
Year: 2015
Price: $6.95

Wine Shop Review: "Light yellow color with green reflection. At first, this Viognier exhibits some citrus and pine aromas, after some time in the glass, it develops peach and mango.
In the mouth, it is quite lovely with a great fruit forward approach. It is intense and balanced at the same time.
The finish is long and offers an array of flavors, such as ripe peach and pear  with creamy, lemony nuances."

My Review: Starting out with a melony scent with a hint of oak, it promised sweet taste. The taste was smooth, pleasantly sweet and not overly so, with the same hints of oak and melon as the smell. Very pleasant to sip on.

I had this wine alone without food.

Tasting - Tabali Sauvignon Blanc

Name: Tabali Reserva Sauvignon Blanc
Variety: Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Limari Valley
Country: Chile
Year: 2013
Price: $7.95

Wine Shop Review: "The 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Reserva is un-oaked and without malolactic, from a selection from the Talinay vineyard and 20% from the Tabali vineyard. It has an herbaceous note of asparagus and peas, a chalky sensation, and a fresh palate with bitter and citric flavors. It’s a superb value."

My Review: This wine had a peary acidic scent, citric. It tasted airy and dry, with lemon zest and a hint of bitterness on the finish. Pleasant to drink, would have again.

Dinner - Palisades Restaurant (Lesser Known Varietals)

The Palisades restaurant has hosted several Wines of the World dinners this semester on Wednesdays, and this past Wednesday evening I was finally able to go to one. The spot is great, located in a historic building the ambiance is a perfect setting to have a great meal and try some wines. The theme this week was lesser known varietals, pairing with food from 4 very different areas of cuisine. The food list and wines paired is shown below:

Food Presentation with wines (from left Albarino, Pinotage, Torrontes, and Touriga-Nacional/Castelao blend)

I started with the Gambas al Ajillo which was paired with the Martin Codax Albarino. My process for each dish and wine was to take a bite of the food to see how it tasted alone, and then to swirl, sniff, and sip once or twice from the wine. I would then try the food again and see how the flavor was changed. The wine itself was as advertised; it smelled of pear and light acidity, and tasted dry with a hint of melon on the finish, and pleasant to drink. The shrimp had creamy sauce which was quite delicious on its own, as was all of the food. When put together, the flavors of the shrimp were enhanced, I could pick up more detail of all the elements combining to a great depth of flavor not achieved in many cheaper foods I'm accustomed to. This pairing worked out great.

I next had the salad, which again was great standing on its own but better with wine. The squash with a kind of sour cream-esque dressing worked well with the other spice on the greens. As for the Colome Torrontes it smelled almost like an IPA or cider to me, having a strong pear scent. It tasted like it smelled, strong body but with a smooth finish. Paired with the salad made me realize something about pairing wine and food: time between sips/bites is important. For instance, a sip of wine right before a bite of food works wonderfully, but in this case a bite of food and a sip of wine right after didn't work out so well, the wine completely overpowered the food and tasted very harsh and strong. After waiting a few moments after having some food though, the wine tastes better but I still preferred to have the wine prior to eating a bite of the food. When consumed this way the pairing worked out well.

The third and my favorite dish was the Braai Pork paired with the Barista Pinotage. The wine had the most unique smell I've ever gotten from a wine, like campfire smoke, leathery and tannic. It tasted as it smelled, smokey and dry but not bone dry. The pork was delicious on its own, cooked to perfection. Pairedd they went together beautifully, both enhancing the flavor of the other. The pork was great on its own, but paired it became exquisite. Certainly my favorite dish/pairing of the meal.

The final dish of the meal was the Bitoque Portuguesa paired with the Cabeca de Toiro Reserva Touriga-Nacional. The wine was a blend of 50% Castelao and 50% Touriga-Nacional, neither of which I had tasted before. The wine smelled sweet but strong, dark fruit and tannic, jammy hints as well. It tasted the same way, differing only because of how extremely dry it was. The steak was great, pleasantly spicy and well done. The same as the salad, I found that drinking a sip of wine before getting into the food worked wonderfully, enhancing the flavor of an already great dish. The other way around however, the dish was overpowered by the extreme tannic dryness of the wine.

Of the wines of the night, my favorite was the Albarino, which would have been enjoyable to sip on with or without a food dish paired with it. The best pairing was the Pinotage and the Braai pork, which was simply amazing together, both enhancing the other for a great combination. That being said, every wine and dish was great, as is to be expected from such a great restaurant. I really enjoyed the dinner and would love to go to another one, or even try to make a three course dinner myself.

Tasting - Ca'Bea

Name: Ca'Bea Sangue di Guida

Variety: 45% Uva Rara, 10% Barbera, 25% Croatina

Region: Oltrepo Pavese

Country: Italy

Year: 2014

Price: $9.95

Wine Shop Review: "Off-dry with a slight fizz, offering bright berry and mineral notes. Medium-bodied, with a clean, fresh palate and fruity finish. This is a rare, sweet red wine that is wonderful with desserts such as dry pastries, cookies and cakes."

My Review: This wine had the most unique smell I've ever encountered, like mashed banana with a bit of nutiness: it reminded me of Port. It had notes of cherry and was super sweet, but not unpleasant. Certainly an intriguing blend that I would like to try again.

Tasting - Alvarez de Toledo

Name: Alvarez de Toledo

Variety: Mencia Roble

Region: Bierzo

Country: Spain

Year: 2009

Price: $8.95

Wine Shop Review: "The 2009 Alvarez de Toledo was bottled just a week before the wine was presented but seems to be showing no symptoms of distress. Balsamic, leather, and black fruits are the principal notes struck by this suave effort that over-delivers in a big way. Like its older sibling, it can be enjoyed now but will have more to say in 2-3 years.”

My Review: This wine smelled dry and acidic to me, promising a taste to math. I wasn't wrong, as it had a dry taste with dark fruit, blackberry and a pleasant black currant. The finish was very nice, smooth on the throat.

Tasting - Codirosso

Name: Codirosso

Variety: Chianti

Region: Tuscany

Country: Italy

Year: 2015

Price: $7.95

Wine Shop Review: "A heck of a value in Chianti, this delicious blend of 90% Sangiovese, 7% Canaiolo and 3% Colorino offers up notes of licorice, new saddle leather, black cherry and berry fruit, loamy soil undertones and a touch of pepper and herbs. It is medium-bodied, savory and best drunk over the next several years."

My Review: This wine had a smell that promised dry taste, along with sweet cinnamon. It tasted dry, with notes of raspberry and licorice, and a smooth finish.

Tasting - The Royal

Name: The Royal Old Vines Steen

Variety: Chenin Blanc

Region: Western Cape

Country: South Africa

Year: 2015

Price: $8.95

Wine Shop Review: "The 2015 Chenin Blanc offers loads of melony fruit interspersed with hints of honeysuckle and peach. It is delicious, crisp, fresh, lively, and a dead ringer for a good Loire Valley Chenin Blanc. Drink it over the next year."

My Review: This wine smelled like a lot of wines do to me: peachy. It tasted like it smelled, peachy and dry with a nutty finish and hints of flowery taste as well.

Price: $6.95

Wine Shop Review: "This wine is soft and rounded. It has lemon and light spiciness along with cool acidity. It is an easy wine that is ripe with apple and fresh lemon juice and ready to drink."

My Review: This wine had a light, acidic smell that reminded me of pear. It tasted quite good with notes of lime, mango, and other tropical fruit. It was creamier than I expected from the smell, and balanced well with dry and sweet components.

Tasting - Crane Lake Riesling

Name: Crane Lake
Variety: Riesling
Region: California
Country: USA
Year: 2015
Price: $5.95

Vintage Cellar Critique: "Pale golden color. Ripe and dried peaches on the nose. Minerals and dried peach flavors. Nicely balanced, leaning towards lime acididty."

My Review: This wine started off with a bitter flowery odor which surprised me. It tasted sweet with no hint of dryness, with fruity overtones and subtle hints of flower.

I had this wine alone without food.

Tasting - Viedos Real Rubio

Name: Vinedos Real Rubio
Variety: Rioja Crianza
Region: Rioja
Country: Spain
Year: 2010
Price: $9.95

Vintage Cellar Critique: "Lightly baked berry aromas vie for attention with leather, spice and mild earth notes, and the result is disjointed. On the palate, this is tight as a drum initially, but more expansive as it unfolds. Cherry, plum, raspberry, vanilla and woodspice flavors finish pure, clean and easy. This is a fine yet manageable Rioja that’s not trying too hard. Drink through 2016."

My Review: This wine started off with a strong tannic odor, which guaranteed a strong dry taste. Its taste was pleasantly dry not overly so, with hints of cedar and tar, pencil lead too. It also had flavors of licorice and blackberry.

I had this wine alone without food.

Tasting - Barao de Figueira

Name: Barao de Figueira Tino Reserva
Variety: Blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Touriga Franca
Region: Beira
Country: Portugal
Year: 2013
Price: $7.95

Vintage Cellar Critique: "From vineyards at 2000 feet elevation, this is a rich and spicy wine that has a pure streak of fruit freshness and a firmly tannic core. It is perfumed from Touriga Nacional in the blend, with red berry and black plum flavors coming through strongly along, balanced by acidity. It will be better from 2017."

My Review: To me this wine smelled of cranberry or pomegranate, some red fruit of that nature. Its taste was pleasantly dry with good fruity sweetness to match that, hints of vanilla subtly on the finish.

I had this wine alone without food.

Tasting - Garnacha de Fuego

Name: Garnacha de Fuego Old Vines Grenache
Variety: Rose
Region: Aragon
Country: Spain
Year: 2014
Price: $2.95

Vintage Cellar Review: "The Garnacha de Fuego Rose is a solid effort that has a light salmon color to go with notions of cherry blossom, orange peel and herbs de Provence. Medium-bodied, supple, fresh easy-drinking, and an outstanding value at $3."

My Review: This wine smelled sweet, with oaky hints and a vanilla scent as well. It tasted silky smooth, hints of a white flower with and pleasantly sweet, not dry at all.

I had this wine alone without food.

Tasting - Villa Vitas

Name: Villa Vitas Ribolla Gialla
Variety: Ribolla Gialla
Region: Venezie
Country: Italy
Year: 2014
Price: $6.95

Vintage Cellar Review: "The 2014 Ribolla Gialla shows more minerality, nice quince, white currant and citrus oil notes, a dry, refreshing mouthfeel and a fragrant bouquet."

My Review: To me this wine smelled earthy, maybe a hint of grassy as well. The taste was unlike any I've tasted before, pleasantly dry with a smooth finish. Certainly would have again.

Tasting - Alvaro Doecq

Name: Alvaro Domecq

Variety: Aranda Cream Sherry

Region: Jerez, Spain

Country: Spain

Price: $9.95

Vintage Cellar's Review: "Golden-brown in color, this has heady aromas of cola, nut, nutmeg, root beer and caramel. A pure, creamy palate of cinnamon apple, mocha, coffee and chocolate. It's quite smooth and balanced, and very long on the finish."

My Review: This wine started with a strong smell of roasted caramel and brown sugar, with the alcohol content clear on the nose. Its taste was very sweet, again with the roasted caramel and brown sugar, with a nutty finish like walnuts or almonds. The finish was surprisingly smooth for such a strong drink, however for best results I think this wine needs to be paired with food. This sherry and the port from last week share the quality that they smell as they taste, which isn't the same for other wine drinks.

I had this wine alone without food.

Tasting - Layer Cake

Name: Layer Cake

Variety: Garnacha

Region: Calatayud

Country: Spain

Year: 2011

Price: $7.95

Vintage Cellar's Review: "The Layer Cake Garnacha from Calatayud, Spain is rich and powerful, yet clean and balanced. Layered with aromas of ultra ripe black fruit. On the palate, the wine shows intense dark fruit with a background of rich dark chocolate and fresh ground coffee with a long creamy finish."

My Review: This wine had a dark fruit smell, almost black like raspberries. The taste was dry but not too dry, pleasantly tannic. It also had a bit of bitterness to it, wet violet came to mind as I drank it. The finish lingered a bit on the tongue after drinking.

I had this wine alone without food.

Tasting - Fossi Rosso

Name: Fossi Rosso

Variety: Blend of Sangiovese, Primitivo, Negroamaro, and Merlot

Region: Fiesole

Country: Italy

Year: Unspecified

Price: $7.95

Vintage Cellar Review: "A blend of Sangiovese and Merlot with a touch of Primitivo and Negroamaro. It will remind those who have traveled to Italy of one of the local house wines they consumed while there.  Simple, juicy, and perfect for drinking with or without food, it’s packed with bright cherry, strawberry and cranberry fruit aromas and flavors."

My Review: This wine started with an oaky smell, hints of vanilla and red fruit. It had a dry taste, very tannic and fruity, hints of strawberry under that. Pleasant to drink, I think there may be more complexity to this wine than I was able to pick up on yet.

I had this wine without food on its own.

Tasting - Nugan Pie in the Sky

Name: Nugan Pie in the Sky Chardonnay

Variety: Chardonnay

Region: South Eastern Australia

Country: Australia

Year: 2013

Price: $7.95

Vintage Cellar's Review: Aromas of poached peach, fig and pineapple with biscuity notes. Tropical, medium bodied style with peach and melon flavours complimented by zesty acids, savoury nuances and a crisp, dry finish. Perfect partner with many styles of modern cuisine including those with an Asian or Mediterranean twist.

My Review: This wine had an oaky smell to me, however where it really shined was in its taste. It was spicy for a white wine with good personality, had zesty lemon flavor, with an oily finish that lingered on your tongue for a bit after drinking. Pleasant to drink, would have again.

I didn't have this wine with food.

Tasting - Invino Si

Name: Invino Si

Variety: 100% Pinot Grigio

Region: Lombardy

Country: Italy

Year: 2014

Price: $5.95

Wine Store Review: Pavia, in the Lombardy region of northern Italy where viticulture dates back thousands of years is home to the Si Pinot Grigio vineyards. The wine is creamy on the palate with a crisp, dry character, fresh citrus and pear flavors and an elegant finish.

My Review: This wine started off with a smell that hinted of floral and citrus flavor, somewhat like orange blossoms. It had the most unique taste I've ever seen in a Pinot Grigio, light and pleasant with a distinct citrus feel. The finish was buttery smooth, very pleasant to drink.

I didn't have this with food.
