Year: 2015
Price $6.95
Vintage Cellar Review: "The 2015 Smoking Loon “Blue Loon” Moscato opens with enticing aromas of honeysuckle, overripe honeydew melon, sundried apricot and a touch of honey, peach and mandarin. The palate presents ripe melon, peach nectar and orange blossom honey. The bright flavors and refreshing acidity make this Moscato the perfect accompaniment to a wide variety of foods. Enjoy “Blue Loon” Moscato with brunch, light chicken dishes or summer appetizers. It’s also delicious served with biscotti, creamy desserts, or fresh fruits such as yellow or white peaches."
My Review: This wine had a floral scent, like blossoms. It tasted super sweet, with notes of lemon and honey most palpable on the palette. It was enjoyable, but the sweetness was a bit much unpaired with some kind of food.

Name: Cantina di Casteggio Sangue di Giuda
Variety: 80% Croatina, 20% Uva Rara
Region: Lombardy
Country: Italy
Year: not specified
Price: $7.95
Vintage Cellar Review: "SANGUE DI GIUDA (Judah's blood) name of the wine because of it's deep ruby red color, with purple hues just like blood! The Judah's part of the story is a bit trickier... part local folklore – (i.e. legend) goes something like this: After Judah’s betrayal and hanging, Jesus forgave him and allowed Judah to come back on earth, specifically in the area of Oltrepo’ by the town of Broni. When the local farmers recognized him, they wanted to kill him, but they spared him when he helped to heal their vines that had been affected by a disease. In return, they named the grape after him. Another explanation is that this wine is a "traitor" because it is so delicious that you can get tempted without much effort. Regardless of what you like to believe, this wine is just incredibly delicious!"
My Review: This wine smelled sweet, with hints of red apple. It tasted smooth, like a sweet grape juice. I expected more of a sparkling effect but didn't pick that up from the tasting, it wasn't very fizzy at all. I enjoyed how it wasn't too sweet, pleasant to sip on and would certainly have again.

The bright foaming palate offers juicy yellow peach, candied nectarine zest and a hint of rose. It's sweet, but it also has enough fresh acidity to stop it from being cloying. Perfect for the afternoon, weekend, or any other time."
My Review: This wine had a sweet scent, with notes of tropical fruit. It tasted super sweet, almost like a fruity mixed drink, with notes of the tropical fruit present and a pleasant finish. Wine Shop Review: "A disclaimer: I have never cared much for Pinotage, the indigenous South African grape variety, but this Pinotage from Indwe, named after the country's national bird, the blue crane, comes across like a light Pinot Noir. Subtle notes of cherries, spice and forest floor are followed by a round, light to medium-bodied, pure, seductive, well-crafted wine that should drink well for a year or so."
My Review: This wine smelled tannic, with notes of violet and lavender. It tasted tannic but not harsh, with earthy, plant-esque notes that balanced nicely.

Variety: blend of Arinto, Loureiro, Trajadura and Azal
Region: Vinho Verde
Country: Portugal
Year: unspecified
Price: $8.95
Wine Shop Review: "It's rare to find a Vinho Verde – the famously light and refreshing "green" white wine of Portugal – that isn't delightful, but this is one of the best of the breed. And there's no better time to quaff these wines than in the spring and summer. This version is lightly effervescent, with a lively acidity that wakes up the palate. It combines lime and peach flavors with a whiff of sea breeze. Somehow it manages to be both ethereal and penetrating."

Grapes from the Lower Mosel provide mineral notes, while grapes from the Middle Mosel create a hint of spiciness and grapes from the Upper Mosel supply fresh, peach flavors. The result is clean, fresh flavor that is delicious with food and perfect to share with friends."
My Review: This Riesling smelled crisp and acidic to me, tart as well and a hint of sweetness. It tasted sweet and tart, with fruity hints and perhaps a bit of earthy undertones too. Flavor of racy spiced berry, olive and black pepper are all good, and there's that patented herbal, roasted quality on the finish, but not too much."

Wine Shop Review: "A classic blend of Shiraz and Grenache, with the raspberries, blackcurrant, lliquorice and spice characteristics of the Shiraz complementing the upfront cherry and cola flavors of the Grenache. The balanced wine offers earthy tones, strawberry aromas and vibrant acidity."
My Review: This was a change of pace from the previous two white wines, having a strong jammy scent with hints of blackberry and light raspberry. It tasted as it smelled, and was bone dry, dark and jammy.
I had this wine alone without food, but would like to pair it with something that would ease its tannic elements.

In the mouth, it is quite lovely with a great fruit forward approach. It is intense and balanced at the same time.
The finish is long and offers an array of flavors, such as ripe peach and pear with creamy, lemony nuances."
My Review: Starting out with a melony scent with a hint of oak, it promised sweet taste. The taste was smooth, pleasantly sweet and not overly so, with the same hints of oak and melon as the smell. Very pleasant to sip on.

Dinner - Palisades Restaurant (Lesser Known Varietals)
The Palisades restaurant has hosted several Wines of the World dinners this semester on Wednesdays, and this past Wednesday evening I was finally able to go to one. The spot is great, located in a historic building the ambiance is a perfect setting to have a great meal and try some wines. The theme this week was lesser known varietals, pairing with food from 4 very different areas of cuisine. The food list and wines paired is shown below:

Food Presentation with wines (from left Albarino, Pinotage, Torrontes, and Touriga-Nacional/Castelao blend) |
I started with the Gambas al Ajillo which was paired with the Martin Codax Albarino. My process for each dish and wine was to take a bite of the food to see how it tasted alone, and then to swirl, sniff, and sip once or twice from the wine. I would then try the food again and see how the flavor was changed. The wine itself was as advertised; it smelled of pear and light acidity, and tasted dry with a hint of melon on the finish, and pleasant to drink. The shrimp had creamy sauce which was quite delicious on its own, as was all of the food. When put together, the flavors of the shrimp were enhanced, I could pick up more detail of all the elements combining to a great depth of flavor not achieved in many cheaper foods I'm accustomed to. This pairing worked out great.
I next had the salad, which again was great standing on its own but better with wine. The squash with a kind of sour cream-esque dressing worked well with the other spice on the greens. As for the Colome Torrontes it smelled almost like an IPA or cider to me, having a strong pear scent. It tasted like it smelled, strong body but with a smooth finish. Paired with the salad made me realize something about pairing wine and food: time between sips/bites is important. For instance, a sip of wine right before a bite of food works wonderfully, but in this case a bite of food and a sip of wine right after didn't work out so well, the wine completely overpowered the food and tasted very harsh and strong. After waiting a few moments after having some food though, the wine tastes better but I still preferred to have the wine prior to eating a bite of the food. When consumed this way the pairing worked out well.
The third and my favorite dish was the Braai Pork paired with the Barista Pinotage. The wine had the most unique smell I've ever gotten from a wine, like campfire smoke, leathery and tannic. It tasted as it smelled, smokey and dry but not bone dry. The pork was delicious on its own, cooked to perfection. Pairedd they went together beautifully, both enhancing the flavor of the other. The pork was great on its own, but paired it became exquisite. Certainly my favorite dish/pairing of the meal.
The final dish of the meal was the Bitoque Portuguesa paired with the Cabeca de Toiro Reserva Touriga-Nacional. The wine was a blend of 50% Castelao and 50% Touriga-Nacional, neither of which I had tasted before. The wine smelled sweet but strong, dark fruit and tannic, jammy hints as well. It tasted the same way, differing only because of how extremely dry it was. The steak was great, pleasantly spicy and well done. The same as the salad, I found that drinking a sip of wine before getting into the food worked wonderfully, enhancing the flavor of an already great dish. The other way around however, the dish was overpowered by the extreme tannic dryness of the wine.
Of the wines of the night, my favorite was the Albarino, which would have been enjoyable to sip on with or without a food dish paired with it. The best pairing was the Pinotage and the Braai pork, which was simply amazing together, both enhancing the other for a great combination. That being said, every wine and dish was great, as is to be expected from such a great restaurant. I really enjoyed the dinner and would love to go to another one, or even try to make a three course dinner myself.

Variety: 45% Uva Rara, 10% Barbera, 25% Croatina
Region: Oltrepo Pavese
Country: Italy
Year: 2014
Price: $9.95
Wine Shop Review: "Off-dry with a slight fizz, offering bright berry and mineral notes. Medium-bodied, with a clean, fresh palate and fruity finish. This is a rare, sweet red wine that is wonderful with desserts such as dry pastries, cookies and cakes."
My Review: This wine had the most unique smell I've ever encountered, like mashed banana with a bit of nutiness: it reminded me of Port. It had notes of cherry and was super sweet, but not unpleasant. Certainly an intriguing blend that I would like to try again.

Tasting - Alvarez de Toledo

Variety: Mencia Roble
Region: Bierzo
Country: Spain
Year: 2009
Price: $8.95
Wine Shop Review: "The 2009 Alvarez de Toledo was bottled just a week before the wine was presented but seems to be showing no symptoms of distress. Balsamic, leather, and black fruits are the principal notes struck by this suave effort that over-delivers in a big way. Like its older sibling, it can be enjoyed now but will have more to say in 2-3 years.”
My Review: This wine smelled dry and acidic to me, promising a taste to math. I wasn't wrong, as it had a dry taste with dark fruit, blackberry and a pleasant black currant. The finish was very nice, smooth on the throat.

Variety: Rioja Crianza

Year: 2010
Price: $9.95
Vintage Cellar Critique: "Lightly baked berry aromas vie for attention with leather, spice and mild earth notes, and the result is disjointed. On the palate, this is tight as a drum initially, but more expansive as it unfolds. Cherry, plum, raspberry, vanilla and woodspice flavors finish pure, clean and easy. This is a fine yet manageable Rioja that’s not trying too hard. Drink through 2016."
My Review: This wine started off with a strong tannic odor, which guaranteed a strong dry taste. Its taste was pleasantly dry not overly so, with hints of cedar and tar, pencil lead too. It also had flavors of licorice and blackberry.

Tasting - Alvaro Doecq

Variety: Aranda Cream Sherry
Region: Jerez, Spain
Country: Spain
Price: $9.95
Vintage Cellar's Review: "Golden-brown in color, this has heady aromas of cola, nut, nutmeg, root beer and caramel. A pure, creamy palate of cinnamon apple, mocha, coffee and chocolate. It's quite smooth and balanced, and very long on the finish."
My Review: This wine started with a strong smell of roasted caramel and brown sugar, with the alcohol content clear on the nose. Its taste was very sweet, again with the roasted caramel and brown sugar, with a nutty finish like walnuts or almonds. The finish was surprisingly smooth for such a strong drink, however for best results I think this wine needs to be paired with food. This sherry and the port from last week share the quality that they smell as they taste, which isn't the same for other wine drinks.

Prime's Port Ruby
Variety: Port
Region: Oporto

Year: undetermined
Price: $9.95
Wine Store Review: "Ruby color; red fruit aromas; pleasantly sweet and balanced taste. As the wines used to produce Prime's Ruby Port age, they gain smoothness and elegance while retaining their fruitiness, intensity and youthful ruby color. They are then blended together for balance and consistency."
Personal: I knew this wine would be strong as soon as I smelled it, the scent of strong alcohol and butterscotch filling the nose. Its taste was a hand in hand blend of super sweet and strong alcohol, with a dry finish. The alcohol was much stronger than I thought it would be, which can be expected from a fortified wine. Certainly a taste I'll have to acquire, but for now I wasn't too big on it. I didn't have food with this tasting.

My Review: This wine had a deep, dark, fruity aroma that misleadingly promised a strong flavor. Its taste was a light tannic one with no sweetness. It was incredibly pleasant, a perfect dry wine to have alone, however it did dry my palette after a glass. The flavor was not bold, simple and dry; a pleasant experience. I didn't have it with food.

Aconga Red Blend 2015
Variety: Blend of Bonarda and Merlot
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2015
Price: $3.99
Aconga Description: "An ancient Incan word meaning Stone Sentinel, Aconcagua is the highest mountain in the Americas, towering over Mendoza, Argentina. It is this great mountain’s name that inspired Aconga, a symbol of grandeur and the celebration of a land steeped in history. Argentina, known as the land of silver, embraces artisans well known for their unparalleled silver craftsmanship. This Aconga wine was similarly crafted with expert Argentinean pride, culminating in a superior blend for everyday enjoyment."
My Review: It smelled like fruit, dark and strong. My first impression of the taste was very tannic, not a hint of sweetness at all. It had dark fruity flavor that you would expect from a Merlot blend. It did have a strong alcohol flavor that comes through on the finish making it not so smooth, but not necessarily in a bad way. A pleasant dry wine with surprising value for such a low price, would drink it again. I did not have it with food.

First Entry:
So far in life, I've only just started to dabble with wine. Introduced first to beer and liquor when I first got into drinking I'd never really considered wine as a drink, thought it was a girl's drink, for movie watching and casual drinking. In my first forays with alcohol, a drink of sophistication and moderation didn't exactly fit with how myself and my esteemed friends and colleagues would drink.
Time brings maturity however, and in the past year maybe a bit longer, I've started to try wine as a casual drink with meals and casual drinking, in situations where I'm planning on having a drink or two and stopping, a notion that a few years ago would have perplexed my younger self. I first got into wine with sweet white wines at parties, pinot grigio and riesling were among my favorites that I first started to try. At first I was hesitant to try red wines, because they were always far too sweet from what I had seen and also were never cool, people always had it at room temperature. I got some advice from friends and tried cabernet sauvignon and merlot, which I actually enjoyed at room temperature. Recently I've tried shiraz and roscato, and can't wait to try what's next. I'm always surprised by the variety of taste that each type has, and how all of them are enjoyable unlike some cases in beer, like IPAs for example.
In this class I hope to learn how to cut through the complexity of shopping for wine, to identify the important parts of a label and make decisions with those. I also hope to learn more about mixing wine with meals, how to drink the right wine with the right dish and so on. I really just want to become a more well-rounded wine drinker, and have more knowledge behind me when picking out which ones to drink and expand the range of wines I enjoy. Drinking wine still has quite a foreign feeling to me and I hope by the end of this class it will be something I can be informed and experienced with.
